NICE approves givinostat for Duchenne muscular dystrophy

NICE has issued final draft guidance recommending the treatment for people aged 6 and over who can walk or stand at the start of treatment, reflecting the population studied in clinical trials.

  • Around 530 people in England are expected to benefit.

  • The medicine will be funded immediately through the Innovative Medicines Fund.

  • NICE says givinostat, also called Duvyzat and made by ITF Pharma, is the third recommended treatment for the condition.

The guidance notes that evidence from clinical trials suggests givinostat may extend the time people can walk by around five years on average compared with established clinical management, although the full benefit remains uncertain because of evidence limitations.
