Socialstyrelsen notes that the number of people diagnosed with cancer in Sweden is expected to increase by just over 20% over the next 20 years. At the same time, more people are living longer with or after cancer-now more than 600,000 people.

The agency argues this development calls for new forms of collaboration and innovation, including answers on how new diagnostics and treatments can be introduced in a more equal and cost-effective way.

What is being proposed

• A mission-driven approach that brings together research, politics and innovation around a shared goal.

• Closer collaboration between the state, healthcare, academia, industry and civil society to shorten the route from lab to citizens.

SweCan (Sweden’s Cancer Mission Hub) is presented as the collaboration platform to accelerate this work, with a shared mission and long-term direction to be developed later. The initiative starts on 21 April, and more than 60 organisations and companies have been invited to participate.
